Holland’s newest film is a fictionalized account of
the last year of Beethoven's life. The film follows
the story of Anna Holz, a student in the Vienna Music
Conservatory, who is summoned by her dying mentor to
complete copying the score of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
Despite warnings that Beethoven is a harsh master, she
eagerly accepts the assignment, and finds herself unwittingly
drawn into Beethoven's tortured and inspired world.
A strange affection soon blossoms between them. Anna
sees her work with Beethoven as an opportunity to prove
her own talent as a composer, and he sees her as an
inspiration for a brilliant series of string quartets.
The collaboration proceeds amicably until Beethoven
slanders Anna’s talents as a composer, refusing to acknowledge
any of her work. She storms out on him leaving both,
her ambitions and the string quartets unrealized…
